the STUD-ette stikes again!!

High school Athlete of the Month

Jackie Nguyen
Field hockey
Scripps Ranch

The senior forward wrapped up a fantastic first month by scoring 17 goals during Scripps Ranch's first 10 games of the season. A three-year varsity starter for the traditionally strong Falcons, Nguyen is being courted by several Division I colleges.

it's starting to feel very comfy.

it's been over two months since we arrived in vietnam and we're definitely settling in nicely. things that seemed crazy to us when we first arrived, like the traffic and tiny plastic chairs in restaurants, just aren't a big deal anymore.

vernon and i had a kick ass weekend. saturday we bought groceries from our hood and chowed down on some street food. i had a bowl of bun rieu and some xoi with meat and mung beans. vernon purchased some goi coun. after lunch we headed out of d4 and into d1 for a really long walk. i like seeing the sites on foot.

sunday started out REALLY early. we ran in this race:

our warm up run consisted of getting to the starting line from our apartment. distance = 4 miles.

i completed the 4K in 19:01, while vernon ran it in 14:11 and won the whole thing! his prize was a round trip ticket to hong kong on cathay pacific! how cool is that? i'll have to buy my own ticket, but i'm excited to see hong kong!! remember on 90210 when jim and cindy walsh moved to hong kong? the post-race refreshments were really awesome. plenty of bottled water, ham and cheese sandwiches on baguettes, indian food, and kellogs cereal! free cereal is like totally my thing.

after the race we walked home and napped hardcore. then i went to work at the saigon times. running hard and working on sundays reminds me of swarthmore.

vern reterns and an overdue update.

here's a funny pic to kick things off --

vern and i were riding in da nang and this random photographer pulls up alongside us on a motorbike and starts snapping away! weird! but totally awesome too.

reading old blog entries REALLY inspires me to be more on top of things on the pork logs. blogging's so easy. i just ramble a bit about life and publish.

here goes some ramblin'...

i've been in vietnam for almost 8 weeks. this year's gonna fly by like no other.

things at the job are sorta ho hum. the big picture is inspiring, but my day to day tasks are pretty lame. i actually spend a lot of time catching up on laguna beach reruns and the latest on the hills. california is the perfect backdrop for catty drama. however, i've found a new job as copy editor of the saigon times. i start on monday. i'll be working both jobs for a few weeks to see how things go. ideally i'd like to quit emw. we'll see...

vernon has been in the states these past five days. i've missed him SO much. vietnam is so much more fun with bunny around. good thing he's comin' back tonight! eee!! and the best part? he's bringing back treats from trader joes! woooot! i love cereal and it turns out i can't live without it. while vernon was gone, i went to my grandma's sister's son's daughter's wedding! it was a fabulous time! whereas american weddings are all about dancing the night away, vina weddings are all about singing. american and viet weddings are BOTH about drinking.

the only shitty part of vietnam thus far is running. the streak is still alive, but eh, so much traffic and too many stares. i'll be tuff.vernon is gonna rent a motorbike SOON. i am SO excited.

here are some pictures of our adventures in 'nam:

in late august we went on a staff retreat in hoi an. it was "special," if you know what i mean. my favorite part of the retreat was when a fellow colleague came up with fuddy duddy charts and graphs explaining  program expansion. when i asked him to label the axis, he has no idea what i was talking about.

and then we spent our days vacationing in da nang. the beach was amazing and the company was even better. i can't wait to return.

lastly, we visited the city of hue. the BEST part was com hen.
